Someone who forgot the grapes on the drying rack and made a new kind of wine. Someone who kept braising the same cut of meat until a city claimed the dish as its own. Someone who laid stones into an arch that is still standing two thousand years later.
Their creations traveled the world. But the version that traveled is never quite the original. Something shifts when it leaves home — the ingredients change, the context falls away, the thing that made it inevitable in that specific place gets lost in translation.

orig orig finds the places where remarkable things were first made — and shows you how to experience them in their original form, in the place that created them. The source, not the copy.
How we measure it
Every place in our library is scored on two dimensions.
How unchanged is this place by the arrival of visitors? A 10 operates exactly as it would if no tourist had ever walked through the door — the same food, the same hours, the same regulars. The menu is not in four languages. The prices did not adjust for the season.
How singular is this to its place? A 10 does not exist outside this city — the dish, the tradition, the experience is only here and has only ever been here. A 7 has versions elsewhere, but this is the original and the difference is real. A 4 is good, but you could find something like it in any city in the country.

Our library is built by people who live in these cities. Every entry is reviewed by a human editor. No place pays to be included. No recommendation is influenced by a transaction.
